FYI Living Article: Coffee

If you’ve followed me for awhile, you might remember that I love to hear good news about my bad habits (especially if animals are not harmed). Matt sends along an interesting article on coffee from FYI Living: Coffee: 5 Surprising Health Perks From That Daily Cup of Joe.

I too love hearing good things about coffee (as I am sipping on it right now). Being a vegan was the best thing that has happened to me, and I am so happy that some coffee shops now have almond and soy milk!

I don’t know – if it’s so good for you, why is it so hard to quit the daily habit? I just quit a few weeks ago, and the first week was hell – headaches, neck aches, tiredness, muscle spasms, etc. I was only a ‘one big cup each morning’ drinker, but had been doing that for decades. Anyway, that’s been my experience.

    I enjoy your blog!

    Best Regards,
    Chris

Thanks so much for the article link. I am a proud coffee addict and will not give it up! One of the reasons i have your book on order from amazon is that you keep it real and unbiased as possible, without inserting your own personal philosophy of eating into the equation. For example, when I recently decided, for many reasons, that i wanted my eating to be plant based, I wanted to do it right, without giving up my personal loves….like coffee!

My book will arrive on Monday. I can’t wait to educate myself! And coffee is allowed! Thanks for your time and effort to educate us to be the healthiest plant eaters around!

I hope you like the book, Sheryl!

One thing to keep in mind is that drinking coffee with meals can lower iron absorption. Same for black and green tea. If you have no problems with iron deficiency, then it probably isn’t something to worry about.

I have given up so much since I went whole foods plant-based three years ago but I draw the line at coffee because I enjoy it. It is my one bad habit. I cut way back though. I have two half-decaf almond milk lattes in the AM and usually nothing more except an occasional decaf in the PM. I fast occasionally (for days at a time) and I no longer get headaches so I suppose that I do not drink enough to be addicted.
